Otto von Habsburg dead at age 98
Otto von Habsburg, died on July 4 at the age of 98. He was chairman of the International Pan-European Union for over 30 years. A man with a rare stature who managed to turn a personal disaster into a successful act. His tireless work over many decades for a united, peaceful Europe eventually gave fruit, which he had the pleasure to witness. Everywhere in Europe, especially in Central Europe, many voices now underline the important role he played in the unification of Europe long before the Wall fell.
It is with great sadness that the Swedish Pan-European Association received the news that one of the really great Europeans has left us after a long and to the very last active life in an unrelenting quest for a better and unified Europe.
Otto von Habsburg was truly a great man. Although his family and himself were extremely hard hit by the First World War and its aftermath, there was never a sign of bitterness. Instead Otto von Habsburg before most people in Europe drew the right conclusions from what had happened. He devoted his whole life to the idea of a unified peaceful Europe and he did it with great success.
Our prevailing sentiments faced with the demise of Otto von Habsburg are immense admiration and gratitude for what he has meant to us Europeans and the continent we live on.
Our thoughts go these days to Otto von Habsburg's family for the loss they have suffered and we hope that they feel our support and our sincere participation in their grief.
